About Us

The Kenya Network of Careleavers is a youth organization, by and for young people from different communities who have grown up or spent part of their life in institutional care/ orphanages/ children's homes/ rehabilitation centres.

The majority of these young people continue to face many socio-emotional and economic challenges since leaving instititutional care.

Who are Careleavers?

Careleavers in our context are young adults who spent time in care as children (i.e. under the age of 18); young people who were brought up in children's homes, orphanages, and rehabilitation centers. The period of time spent in care can range from as little as a few months to as long as one’s whole childhood (18 years). The care could have been provided directly by the government or private sector, i.e. churches, individuals, groups and other institutions.

“The plight of Careleavers has for a long time gone unnoticed. These young people are silently suffering and forgotten. Some are still submerged in the distresses of their past, deterring them from personal development. Their present challenges are overwhelming, yet they still have dreams and hope to continue their studies, find jobs, making meaningful relationships and lead normal lives. I believe that each of us can be the hope and dream that these young people have been waiting for, the bridge for them to get to their next stage in life”
